Shirley MacLaine, Poppy Drayton and Loreto Peralta will star in the live-action family film “A Little Mermaid,” based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale.
Newly launched MVP Studios is producing the film. The Florida-based company was founded by Robert Molloy, grandson of the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, and Armando Gutierrez (“Walt Before Mickey”) with a focus on producing and distributing family films.
Shooting is set to start in March in Georgia, with Chris Bouchard (“Hackney’s Finest”) directing from a screenplay by Blake Harris (“12 Dates of Christmas”). Molloy and Gutierrez are the film’s producers.
Andersen’s story, first published in 1837, centers on a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea to gain a human soul after she falls in love with a handsome prince. Disney’s animated “The Little Mermaid” was released in 1989 and grossed over $200 million worldwide.
Another live-action “Little Mermaid” adaptation — starring Chloe Moretz — is in the works at Universal.
Peralta will portray a young orphan who discovers a beautiful and enchanting creature (Drayton), who she believes to be the real “Little Mermaid.” MacLaine plays an eccentric woman who has intimate knowledge of the story.
